  9.             Welcome to HELP! Version 4.0.  If you are a previous user of
  10.             HELP! you will notice some very big changes in this version.
  11.             A lot of effort went in to making this program very reliable
  12.             and to  have it  not blow  up.  If you have never used HELP!
  13.             before, sit  back and  feel the  power as  you command  your
  14.             system like you have never done before.

  18.             Program Description

  20.             HELP! is  a program  designed to  get the most out of a HARD
  21.             Disk based  computer system.  It was originally conceived as
  22.             a way  to help  beginners use their systems.  It soon became
  23.             much more  than that.  As a professional engineer who was in
  24.             charge of  many PC  based systems  in a large corporation, I
  25.             conceived HELP!  to be  a valuable tool in maintaining these
  26.             systems.   One of my primary goals was to incorporate all of
  27.             the valuable utilities I have used or felt I needed into one
  28.             powerful package.   HELP! includes an extensive help system.
  29.             At any  time you  can press <F1> and get help on the current
  30.             subject.   Pressing H  from the  main menu  will give you an
  31.             index to  the help  system so you can read about any command
  32.             or feature of HELP!.

  34.             HELP! is  not a  memory hog when it executes other programs.
  35.             In fact  it takes  up less than 2K of memory.  HELP! is also
  36.             not memory  resident.  This means that other memory resident
  37.             utilities should  work fine.  The way it works is this.  The
  38.             file HELP!.COM is loaded into memory first.  This program is
  39.             small and stays in memory as long as HELP! is running.  This
  40.             then calls  HELPRUN.EXE.   This is  the guts of the program.
  41.             This program  is large,  but does  not stay  in memory  when
  42.             another program is run from within HELP!.

  58.             *    Copy a  File or  Tagged Files to different drive and/or

  73.             *    Erase will erase one or more files with one command.

  75.             *    Equipment  Check   displays  CPU  &  Coprocessor  type,
  76.                  display  adapters,   parallel  and   serial  ports  and
  77.                  extended and expanded memory present.

  79.             *    Move a  File or  Tagged Files to a different drive or a
  80.                  different directory.   This  differs from  the move  in
  81.                  that it  does not make a copy of the file, but moves it
  82.                  somewhere else.

  84.             *    Locate a  File or  Files on your disk.  This allows you
  85.                  to search  for a file name in all of the directories of
  86.                  your disk.

  88.             *    Change the  file Attributes of a file.  This will allow
  89.                  you to  protect and  unprotect a  file from change with
  90.                  the read  only attribute  or you  can change  the other
  91.                  attributes as well including the time & date Stamp.

  93.             *    Send files  to your  printer in either formatted or un-
  94.                  formatted styles.   Also  Hex-ASCII-EBCDIC file dumping
  95.                  is allowed.

  97.             *    Tree gives  you a visual map of the directory structure
  98.                  of the disk.  This is a quick way to change directories
  99.                  when cleaning  up your  disk.   This also will have the
  100.                  directories marked  which contained  matches  from  the
  101.                  last Locate.

  103.             *    View allows  you to  view 1-4 text files on the screen.
  104.                  There is  also a  scan & compare command so you can see
  105.                  where files differ.

  111.             Features Added or Changed in Version 4.0
  112.             
  113.             Version 4.0 has one less file than it had before.  This will
  114.             clear up  a lot  of the errors people experienced when HELP!
  115.             could not find the overlay file.

  117.             The help  system has  been totally  redone  and  is  now  an
  118.             indexed system.   What this means for the user is that it is
  119.             much faster  retrieving screens.   Also  when using the Help
  120.             command from  the main menu you can randomly access the help
  121.             screens.   It is almost like having then HELP! manual online
  122.             at all times!

  124.             The view command has been totally redone.  The screen layout
  125.             and the  command sequences  have been  changed and  are much
  126.             more logical now.  Many commands have been added to help you

  139.             navigate your  file.   Among these is the Search command and
  140.             the Scan  & Compare  command.   Scan & Compare allows you to
  141.             compare two  to four  files from any point in the files (not
  142.             necessarily the same point) and it will stop scanning at the
  143.             first non-compare.
  144.             
  145.             The screen  combinations have  been enhanced  also.  You can
  146.             now turn  off the  key status  display  and  gain  the  file
  147.             attributes display.   This  allows the  viewing of  far more
  148.             files than  the verbose file display.  Also you can turn off
  149.             the status window and have just a file window that fills the
  150.             whole screen.

  152.             For EGA/VGA  users I've added a 43 line mode for EGA/VGA and
  153.             a 50 Line mode for the VGA.  HELP! auto configures itself by
  154.             default.   What this means is that if you are running an EGA
  155.             that is  in a  120 col  X 43  line mode,  HELP! will use the
  156.             whole screen  and add  columns and  rows to the file display
  157.             and view  displays and so on to use all of screen.  The only
  158.             requirement is  that the  display adapter  use  the  EGA/VGA
  159.             conventions of  storing the  size in  low RAM.   This covers
  160.             most EGA  style adapters.   If  your EGA/VGA  does not  have
  161.             these modes  the 43  and 50  lines are available from within
  162.             HELP! and can be automatically used at the programs start.

  164.             Your color  selections  have  also  been  enhanced  and  are
  165.             selectable from the options menu as they have always been.
  166.             
  167.             DOS's Mode  BW80  can  be  used  to  send  HELP!  into  it's
  168.             monochrome color  set for  color adapter  users who run with
  169.             monochrome displays.   This  can also  be turned on from the
  170.             options menu.

  172.             The Erase  Subdirectory command  has been  eliminated and is
  173.             now included in the Erase Command.  This, I am sure, will be
  174.             more convenient.

  176.             The Equipment  command has been added to the Utilities menu.
  177.             This will  display the Display Adapters and Monitors in your
  178.             system, the  number of  serial & Parallel ports you have and
  179.             the Processor  & Co-Processor Type.  Any Extended & Expanded
  180.             Memory amounts  will also  be displayed.   I've  found  this
  181.             command to  be an asset in maintaining multiple systems in a
  182.             business.   With two key strokes you can instantly inventory
  183.             your system.

  185.             The Print  Command has  been redone  also.  It is faster and
  186.             now prints  margins correctly.   Also  the ability  to  send
  187.             output to  other than  LPT1 has  been added.   You  can send
  188.             output to  any of  your serial  or parallel  ports.  You can
  189.             also automatically program your serial ports on startup.

  191.             There is  room to  display disk  drives A  - L  on Drive and
  192.             Format Commands.  They do recognize A - Z however.

  206.             The Expert  Level Can  be set  to get  rid of  some  of  the
  207.             prompting such  as Are You Sure?  Are You Sure You Are Sure?
  208.             and so on.
  209.             
  210.             In the Past error checking has been handled poorly by HELP!.
  211.             This has  all changed  now.   No more  will the  screens  be
  212.             messed up  with Abort, Retry, Ignore?  Trying to erase Read-
  213.             Only files will not blow up the system, copying them will be
  214.             allowed.   Try it!   I'm  sure you'll  like it!   If you are
  215.             printing and  you run  out of  paper or you jam or something
  216.             else occurs, this is now handled eloquently.

  218.             Format now truly recognizes if it is a HARD Disk you want to
  219.             format and prompts you as such.
  220.             
  221.             The Attributes Command appears on both the Main Menu and the
  222.             Utilities menu where it used to be.

  224.             The Locate  Command now  reads the  tree when it is running.
  225.             Any matches  found will  be flagged  in the  TREE so you can
  226.             remember which directories contained the matches.
  227.             
  228.             The TREE Command will not be re-read when you make, erase or
  229.             rename subdirectories.   This  is handled automatically now.
  230.             You can flag directories with special attributes in the tree
  231.             display.   TREE &  Locate will  now operated  to the maximum
  232.             depth allowed  by DOS.   The TREE Display will automatically
  233.             configure itself  for the  screen size and the maximum depth
  234.             of the  directories on  your disk.   This  allows the entire
  235.             disk structure to be seen without horizontal scrolling.  You
  236.             can also  rename directories  from within  the TREE Command.
  237.             Renaming directories  only works  on version 3.0 or later of
  238.             DOS.

  240.             The Date  & Time  Commands  now  allow  you  to  set  an  AT
  241.             compatible battery  clock.    This  is  prompted  after  the
  242.             internal clock is set.

  253.             If you  have an  older version  of HELP!  already, erase the
  254.             files HELP!.COM,  HELPRUN.000,  HELPRUN.COM,  HELP!.HLP  and
  255.             HELP.CFG before installing the new version.

  271.             There are 4 files supplied with HELP!.  These are HELP!.COM,
  272.             HELPRUN.EXE, HELP!.HLP,  and this  READTHIS file.  The first
  273.             three are all that is needed to run HELP!.
  274.             
  275.             The simplest  way to configure your system, is to copy these
  276.             files into a directory and type HELP! to start.  This is the
  277.             easiest but  not necessarily  the best  way to  start HELP!.
  278.             The recommended way, is to copy these files into a directory
  279.             that the  DOS Variable  PATH points  to.  This will give the
  280.             advantage of being able to start HELP! anywhere you might be
  281.             on the disk.  Of course if you are going to use HELP! all of
  282.             the time  this would  not be  an advantage, but it would not
  283.             hurt either.   If you do not need the online help system you
  284.             can get rid of HELP!.HLP.

  286.             Any  Memory  resident  utilities  should  be  loaded  before
  287.             HELP!.COM is  started.   If they  are not,  the system  will
  288.             probably not  run correctly  and will not release the memory
  289.             used by  HELP!.COM when  you quit  HELP!.    Some  of  DOS's
  290.             commands are memory resident and should be run before HELP!.
  291.             These are PRINT, GRAPHICS, MODE and others.

  296.             
  297.             HELP! is distributed under the user supported concept.  This
  298.             concept is  an alternate  way of  distributing software.  My
  299.             belief is  that you  should have  a chance  to try  software
  300.             before you buy.  This software is here for you to try.  This
  301.             does not  mean that  this software is free.  I distribute my
  302.             software this  way because it offers the lowest overhead and
  303.             I can  keep my  price low.   This  benefits all of us.  Many
  304.             good software  writers have  abandoned this  method  because
  305.             people abuse it's intent.
  306.             
  307.             In a  nutshell, try  this program for a reasonable period of
  308.             time, if  you intend to continue using it, send $30.  If you
  309.             don't send  $30, please  do not  continue using  HELP!.   In
  310.             return  I   will  send   you  the  latest  version  and  the
  311.             documentation.   Whether you  choose to  use it or not, feel
  312.             free to pass it along to others.
